A River of Skulls

Sheep Ranch Productions presents a full length feature film written and directed by Suza Lambert Bowser. Executive production by Maureen Catalina and Suza Lambert Bowser.

After losing their loved ones, Eula Seeley and "half- breed," Jack Rivers, fight tragic odds to survive deceit and betrayal, greed and violence in the wild 1870’s, finding each other in the process. The action takes place in Raven’s Bend, a boomtown in Calaveras County*, where death in the mining camps, the brothels, and even the child-birthing bed challenge men and women, alike, to stay alive.

KEY THEMES AND IDEAS: Women’s Lives during the Gold Rush, American Indian (MiWuk) Lives during the Gold Rush, Chinese and African American Social Positions, "Passing," and Assimilation.

*The Spanish word "calaveras" means "skulls." Calaveras County takes its name from the Calaveras River, which was reportedly so designated by Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga.

The unique aspect of "The Match" is that it results in a reality-based television-ready story about the competitors and their horses: their stories, their struggles, their defeats, and their victories.
